T H E American TV money-men. who as much as anyone
else nowadays determine the destiny of world boxing
titles, will have been deeply impressed by their second
glimpse of Ireland's brilliant European featherweight
champion Barry McGuigan.
McGuigan looked breathtaking in crushing lanky Colombian
substitute Felipe Orozco in just two minutes 10
seconds of the second of their scheduled 10-rounds main
event in front of a capacity crowd at the Kings Hall and a
coast-to-coast American audience on
the NBC network.
DENNIS ANDRIES, having, retained his British lightheavyweight
title with a frighteningly emphatic 12th round
knockout of Battersea challenger Devon Bailey, now seeks
official nomination as E u r o p e a n title contender.
It is no more than he deserves, although the prospect of
the ungainly brawler from Hackney as European champion
will not please the purists.
COSTA RICAN bantamweight
champion
JORGE PRENTAS (8st
I libs) made an impressive
British debut with a
stoppage of the useful
N o r t h e r n e r BILLY
HARDY <8st 7'/2lbs) in
the fifth of their scheduled
six-threes.
ON Merseyside Jack Tansey has been the lynch pin of St Teresa's ABC
for 30 years. Sadly the day has come when, at 69, he has decided to
leave amateur boxing for good.
Tansey's withdrawal from boxing to spend more time with his
supportive wife Peggy and his daughter Carol will mean the loss of a
man who has served boxing and the Merseyside community with such
passion over the years.
Around Merseyside Tansey
is many things to many people.
Some remember him with
fondness; others thank the day
he leaned on them and
straightened out their lives;
while there are some who
would rather forget they ever
tangled with this ex-PTI who
served in both the Royal and
Merchant Navies.
