IN A WEEK when British boxing is under attack, it suffered another
self-inflicted wound as Juan Figueroa, an utterly inept Argentinian, was
wiped out in 67 seconds of the first round of a disgusting mismatch
against unbeaten heavyweight puncher Frank Bruno, writes HARRY
MULLAN.
In 12 years at the Wembley ringside, I can't recall a worse main event
- and that's not being wise after the event. Our fight previews said that
"Bruno . . . looks booked for another easy night", and predicted "a
short-lived. . . and very one-sided match".
THANKS to the exceptional gameness of
American import Mark Lee what might have
been a drearily one-sided 10-rounder with
Commonwealth heavyweight champion Trevor
Berbick of Canada turned into something more
elevating writes TIM MO.
Berbick (15st 51bs) making his debut in this
country for manager Mickey Duff, was every
bit as emphatic a winner as the 99-96Vi scoreline
of referee Harry Gibbs suggests but Lee
(14st 71bs) contested his technical and physical
superiority throughout.
LEEDS southpaw Gary Felvus boxed astutely on the retreat
to pick up a points decision over the shorter, but more
aggressive Edward Lloyd after eight two minute rounds at
Pat Brogan's European Sporting Club.
The match provided an interesting clash of styles with the
sharper Felvus (9st 91bs) opening confidendy, but having to
undergp an uncomfortable middle passage as Lloyd (9st
81bs) struck back.
THE promoting club's Sean McLaughlin, who beat Joe
McGillion in the Ulster heavyweight final, confirmed his
superiority over the Carrickmore boxer with a fine points
victory a week later on the Errigal tournament at the Imperial
Hotel, Garvagh.
McLaughlin's snappy left jabs kept the smaller McGillion
at long range most of the time.
Plucky McGillion began to connect in the third round,
but McLaughlin had built up too big a points lead in the
first to be caught.
