P A U L M I T C H E L L gained the vacant Central Area
light-middleweight title when he d r o v e Wayne Crolla to a
f i f t h - r o u n d defeat in a scheduled ten (three-minute)
r o u n d e r at Pat B r o g a n ' s E u r o p e a n Sporting Club.
A l t h o u g h Mitchell opened with a flourish and had
C r o l l a over for eight in t h e s e c o n d , he soon discovered
t h a t Crolla was n o t s o easily dispensed with, a n d it took
until t h e midway point b e f o r e he o p e n e d u p with a short,
but decisive, volley that p r o m p t e d ref H a r r y Warner's
i n t e r v e n t i o n with Crolla still upright, but t a k i n g heavy
shots t o t h e h e a d .
MYSTERY surrounded the non-appearance of
super-heavyweight Keith Ferdinand to defend
his ABA title. Ferdinand, a Marine, was
reported absent by his Navy superiors and
apparently "somewhere in London". Word
was got to BOBBY WELLS, who lost to
Ferdinand in the English semi-finals, on the
eve of the British semis.
F O U R of the six reigning A B A champions who came through to the
Preston stage survived t o defend their titles at Wembley.
Light-fly John Lyon, b a n t am John Hyland, light-middle Rod Douglas
and light-heavy Tony Wilson all won their semis on unanimous points
decisions.
