YUGOSLAVIA'S former Olympic gold medallist and
amateur world champion Mate Parlov finally annexed
the professional crown when he kayoed WBC
champion Miguel Cuello in the ninth.
Parlov, who only turned pro at the late age of 27,

technique and great advantages in height and reach.
He is Yugoslavia's first world professional champion.
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN means to get the 1978
boxing season off with a real big bang.
Their February 3 card features a rematch between young
welterweights Wilfredo Benitez and Bruce Curry, who
fought the Fight Of The Year last November. Although the
21-year-old Curry floored the 19-year-old Puerto Rican
three times and had him on the verge of a technical
knockout, the officials jobbed
him by a split decision.

careers — if they have not retired already. For
European champion Jim Watt, though, the best part
of his professional life is only just beginning.
ANOTHER excellent Humberside prospect emerged from
the National Association of Boys Clubs Class "A" Championships
at Cesars Palace as Michael Docherty (St Paul's,
Hull) won the under-51 kilos title and the trophy for best
stylist in the championships.
