FORMER British lightwelterweight
champion
Joey Singleton looked good
in his first outing for 16
months as he pounded exfeatherweight
champion
Tommy Glencross into
retirement at the end of the
fourth of their scheduled
eight rounds at Seymour
Hall.
TIM WOOD, Leicester's
former British lightheavyweight
champion,
lost his fourth straight fight
when he was outpointed by
Central Area title holder
ALEK PENARSKI, of Horwich,
Cheshire, in the eight
rounds main event at the
Winter Gardens.
THE partnership of Terry Lawless and his trainer Frank
Black, must surely be boxing's equivalent of that famous
soccer duo, Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.
Like his soccer counterpart, Terry is an articulate and
personable man, fortunately lacking the brashness of the
Nottingham Forest manager, while Frank, like Taylor and
most backroom boys, keeps a very low profile.
Cork-born Frank, a youthful looking 44 despite
prematurely grey hair, teamed up with Terry some eight
years ago and although they have enjoyed more than their
share of success their present stable is probably the most
talented yet.
DECEMBER 3 1965 should appear in the record books as the date Scotland's
magnificent Walter McGowan won the European bantamweight title from Italy's
Tommaso Galli. It doesn't — but only because a Belgian referee declared a draw,
and so saved Gailli's crown, writes Simon Euan-Smith.
FORMER England heavyweight
Royston Hunte sensationally
crashed out of
the RAF Open Championships,
the opening stage of
this season's ABA's, at the
very first hurdle — the
semi-finals — when halted
in the second round of his
contest with promising Ben
Ellis.
