THE Conteh comeback went pretty much as predicted, with Britain's former
world light-heavyweight champ coasting to a one-sided points win over durable
Joe Cokes of Dallas, USA (12- 8l/i) in the 10-rounds top-liner on Eddie Thomas's
debut show at the Sobell Centre.
Referee Roland Dakin gave Conteh (12-UVi) every round with a 100-90 card.
Being generous, I thought the American might have shared one round, but
Conteh's superiority was complete.
THE most dramatic ending of the night came in a scheduled
lightweight eight threes between Brighton's Barry Price
(9-12) and Hartlepool's George Feeney (9-9) when Barry
was stopped in the third.
FORMER double ABA champion Colin
Jones, Gorseinon (10-6) had too many guns
for outclassed Willie Turkington, Doagh
(10-11%) whom he dismissed ruthlessly in
just one minute 25 sees of the first of their
scheduled six (three minute) rounder on
the Sobell Centre undercard.
TOM WILLIAMS, last
year's beaten ABA lightmiddleweight
finalist,
crashed to shock defeat in
the Southern Counties ABA
Championships, the first
stage of this year's ABA title
hunt. He was outpointed on
majority decision by Hove's
George Danahar in a
scrappy middleweight final
at the Sports Centre
ENGLAND rep Rupert Christie, ranked Britain's number two
light-heavyweight by Boxing News had his hopes of ABA glory
shattered at the Midland Counties Southern Zone Championships.
Christie's title run got no further than the preliminary bouts at the Austin
Club, Longbridge, where he went out to Vince Smith, a 22-year-old
Birmingham car worker.
