Boxing News 1974 Memorabilia

IT WAS pretty much the same old story with Joe Bugner in the main event on
Harry Levene's show at the Empire Pool. Joe clearly outpointed Jimmy Ellis, faded
former WBA heavyweight champion from Louisville, Kentucky, but the fight was
not particularly exciting, and there were some boos at the finish.

ANGELO DUNDEE has worked with every kind of
fighter, from four-rounders to great world champions.
He would not profess to be the greatest trainer
and cornerman in boxing today but it is hard to think
of anyone better.

BOXING writers have often told the tales of ageless wonders such as Archie
Moore and Jersey Joe Walcott. A closer look will reveal that we have such an
ageless wonder in our own times.

THE topsy-turvy situation which has been going on in the
light-welterweight division among the leading lights was
never more evident than on the Robert Browning promotion
at Manor Place Baths.

SEVENTY-ONE competitors attended from the
USSR, Rumania and Czechoslovakia (these three
countries were represented by full squads), Hungary,
East Germany, Cuba and the hosts, Bulgaria, the 10th
Spartakiad of "Friendly Socialist Armies," held
recently at the Universiade sports hall in Sofia,
Bulgaria.

BRITAIN'S days as the poor relation in world boxing
circles are over. Boxing Board Secretary Ray Clarke
returned from the WBC annual congress in Mexico
this week having demonstrated Britain's new power
and influence in the most effective way possible — by
clinching world title nominations for three of our
fighters, Kevin Finnegan, Ken Buchanan, and Evan
Armstrong.
