THE fight everyone thought would be a walkover turned into a war for
Muhammad Ali, as he retained his world heavyweight championship with a
unanimous, but a bitterly contested, points win over Earnie Shavers at Madison
Square Garden.

BRITISH heavyweight boxing, already in dire
trouble following the knockout defeats of Richard
Dunn and John L. Gardner, really will go down for
the count if top contender Billy Aird fails against
Costa Rican Gilbert Acuna in the 10-rounds main
event at Seymour Hall on Tuesday.

FORMER British light-welterweight champion Des
Morrison (Bedford) meets Colin Powers of Paddington for
the vacant British title on Mickey Duff's show at York Hall,
Bethnal Green, on Wednesday, October 19.
The title was relinquished earlier this year by Morrison's
stablemate Dave Green.
Powers lost in five rounds to Morrison last time they met, for the
vacant Southern Area title a year ago, but has improved
considerably since then.
