CARLOS MONZON, one of history's great champions, retained his world middleweight title for a
record 14th time with a magnificent points win over Rodrigo Valdes in Monte Carlo last weekend.
Ringside report and more pictures — pages 2-5.

ALAN MINTER, gashed in his last fight against
Ronnie Harris, came back with a satisfying win
when he competently outpointed aged Emile Griffith
over 10 rounds in the chief supporting fight to
Monzon v Valdes (writes GRAHAM HOUSTON).

CARDIFF'S Billy Waith, official challenger for the British
welterweight title, was halted in the seventh of a scheduled
eight-rounder by Argentina's rugged Daniel Gonzalez on
the Monte Carlo bill.

DERRY lightweight Charlie Nash, lifted by a wildly-enthusiastic home crowd,
boxed intelligently to outscore dangerous American Larry Stanton (New York) in
the 10-rounds main event at the Templemore Sports Complex.

LOOKING at their current powerful squad, it seems hard to believe that from
their date of formation in 1884, Bethnal Green's Repton, Britain's premier
clubside, produced just one ABA champion right up until 1967 — when brilliant
bantamweight Mickey Carter broke the unhappy sequence.
