OUR choice as third best overseas fight of 1977 is the
heavyweight title bout in which Muhammad Ali
retained his crown with a unanimous decision over
Earnie Shavers at Madison Square Garden.
FIGHT No 5 features the exciting Duran of
Panama, who retained his WBA lightweight title with
a unanimous 15 rounds decision over Edwin Viruet, of
Puerto Rico, at the Philadelphia Spectrum on September
17. The Saturday afternoon bout was
televised live in North America on ABC's Wide World
of Sports.
FORMER British light-heavyweight champion Tim Wood
meets Central Area champion Alek Penarski in the eight
rounds main event at the Winter Gardens, Cleethorpes on
January 30. The match is made at 12st 9lbs.
Wood has fought only once since losing his title to Bunny
Johnson, being outpointed at Wolverhampton by Victor Attivor.
The Cleethorpes bill Includes Dave Moore v Prince Rodney,
Tommy Joyce v Roysie Francis, and Geoff Raynor v Rod Gregory.
Wood, meanwhile, is paired with Pat McCann in an eliminator
for Johnny Waldron's Southern Area title. Purse bids should be
lodged with the area secretary by 5 pm on Thursday, January 5,
with the contest to take place by March 5.
