JIMMY YOUNG, a 15-1 outsider in the pre-fight betting, came close to pulling off
boxing's biggest upset in years when he forced defending heavyweight champ
Muhammad Ali to go all the way to keep his title in front of a near-capacity crowd
at the Capital Centre.
TIM WOOD rallied strongly in the last three rounds
to outpoint Phil Martin over 15 rounds and capture
the vacant British light-heavyweight title in a mostly
lack-lustre fight at the World Sporting Club.
CAMBERWELL heavyweight Denton Ruddock, who took
the Southern Area title in only his fourth professional
contest, seems set to retain it in his first defence, over 10
rounds, against Bournemouth battler Sid Falconer on
Falconer's home ground at the Maison Royale, Bournemouth,
on Monday.
INGLEWOOD, April 29: Danny "Little Red" Lopez,
avenging a defeat of 15 months ago, knocked out Mexican
veteran Famoso Gomez after 1 min 15 sees of the third of a
scheduled 10-rounder to put himself in line for a crack at
WBC champ David Kotei, of Ghana.
