JOSE CABA, speaking from the experience of 15
rounds with WBA world champion Eusebio Pedroza,
may not have been far off the mark when he told
Barry McGuigan that: "You're the real world
champ."
The 23-year-old from Clones gave a performance that
touched perfection in dazzling Caba to a seventh-round
defeat, and he must now be taken very seriusly indeed as a
world title prospect.
HACKNEY'S Dennis Andries made a successful first
defence of his British light-heavyweight title by closely
outscoring old rival Tom Collins after 12 give-and-take
rounds at Watford Town Hall.
WORKMANLIKE was the word for Marvin Halger's ninth
world middleweight title defence as he systematically dismantled
Juan Domingo Roldan.
And for the second time in a row, Marvin has looked
slightly less than marvellous.
Presumably most BN readers will have seen ITV's recording
of the March 30 fight and formed their own conclusions.
The packed 5,000 crowd at the Riviera hotel in Las Vegas
sounded less than enthusiastic. Most of the cheers were for
Roldan, the underdog slugger from Argentina.
UNBEATEN Californian Richard Sandoval,
23, halted defending champion Jeff Chandler
of Philadelphia in the 15th round to win the
WBA bantamweight title in a one-sided bout at
the Sands Casino Hotel.
