TWELVE DAYS before his death, former Sidmouth welterweight Jimmy O'Brien made
a tape from his hospital bed about his life and boxing career with his son Lieutenant Peter
O'Brien, R.N., who told me: "My father knew he was going to die, but insisted on doing
this recording, even though he was very weak."
Peter sent me a copy, and listening to Jimmy's voice on that tape makes this the saddest
article I have ever written. We corresponded frequently during his later years, and as we
both came from Devon, had a special affinity. He was such a brave and likeable man.
