JOHN MUGABI. the power-punching Ugandan, blasted out another
big win as he overwhelmed southpaw slugger Frank "The Animal"
Fletcher of Philadelphia in the fourth of their scheduled 10-rounder.
A packed crowd of 2,500 and an American TV audience of millions
saw light-middleweight title contender Mugabi step up into the
middleweights to score his 33rd consecutive inside schedule victory.

JACKIE BEARD, perhaps the best of the
young American featherweights, kept his
NABF title with a unanimous 12 rounds win
over veteran REFUGIO ROJAS but I
wouldn't fancy his chances against Barry
McGuigan.

ROD DOUGLAS, the London light-middle generally
regarded as Britain's best medal bet, opened his
Olympic account on the third day of competition
with a 4-1 victory over Kenya's Stephen Okumu —
but his Irish counterpart. Sam Storey of Belfast,
went out to Italy's tough Romolo Casamonica.
Those who expected Douglas to produce gold
medal winning form were disappointed. The Bow
youngster appeared somewhat relieved to have
come through with a victory.
