TONY WILLIS boxed proficiently, if unspectacularly,
to outpoint Lee McKenzie in a 10 threes all-southpaw
British light-welterweight eliminator at the Civic Hall.
Willis began well. He moved forward positively,
jabbing crisply and jarring McKenzie, Croydon, with
right hooks. Towards the end of the round McKenzie
counterpunched as if to signal the pattern of the rest of
the fight.
IT'S another safety first job for Gerry Cooney
tomorrow night (Saturday, December 8) as the
heavyweight puncher sheds ring rust after a twoyear
lay-off.
But at least veteran George Chaplin can hardly
fail to better the pacifist performance of Phil Brown,
whom Cooney overpowered in four rounds in
Alaska on September 29.
GREG PAGE is the new WBA heavyweight champion but for
how long is anybody's guess. If Gerrie Coetzee has his way it
won't be for more than a matter of days.
Page knocked out Coetzee in the eighth round of their title
fight at the Superbowl — but a full 50 seconds after the round
should have ended. Thanks to a malfunction in the electric clock
used by timekeeper Blackie Swarts, the knockout came at 3mins
50secs of the round.
COMMONWEALTH and Canadian
heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick, now
boxing out of Miami, was unimpressive in
winning a unanimous 10-round decision over
Walter Santemore of New Orleans at Harrah's
Casino Hotel.
THERE are some very nice people in the boxing game and
some-disgraceful fakes.
The Zambia Boxing Board met one of the fakes-in the
shape of t h e manager who sent Frank Realihno and Diego
Afonso to Lusaka to face John Sichula and Lottie Mwale
on August 25. Realihno was supposed to have won 62 of
his 69 fights and A f o n s o claimed only one loss in 50 bouts.
These statistics were a pack of lies. The European
Record Book shows Realihno having 14 fights between
1971 and 1978 of which he lost 12 and then being inactive
until he arrived in Lusaka. There is no trace of Afonso
anywhere.
TONY BURKE of Croydon continued his sensational
current form following wins over Dean Scarfe and Mike
Farghaly when he smashed former ABA middleweight
champ Tyrone Forbes to defeat in just 1.50 of the first of a
scheduled eight threes main event at the Longford Crest
Hotel.
