KIRKBY'S British featherweight champion Paul Hodkinson
(9st) made short work of title challenger Kevin Taylor,
Rochdale, (8st 131bs l0oz) whom he disposed of in two
rounds on Merseyside's biggest fight night for years at the
Kirkby Sports Centre

THE date was November 5,1946. And there were certainly
fireworks at Harringay Arena that evening. Liverpool
welterweight Dick Shields was very popular in London, and
was due to tackle a young up-and-coming Welshman named
Eddie Thomas. It was Jack Solomons' promotion, with
Freddie Mills versus Joe Baksi as the top-liner.
At the weigh-in was the usual covey of photographers,
and after taking the normal shots of the two principals, they
needed a few "gimmick" photos. So Baksi promptly picked
up Dick Shields in one huge hand, and lifted him in the air
where Dick sat comfortably on Joe's hand while the photos
were taken.
