LLOYD HONEYGHAN gets his chance to avenge the sole
defeat on his record when he challenges Mexico's Jorge
Vaca for the WBC version of the world welterweight title at
Wembley Arena on Tuesday (March 29).
Honeyghan's 31-fight winning run, and tenure of the
WBC and IBF l0st 71bs titles, came to an end last October
when Vaca beat him on • a controversial and confused
technical decision at the nearby Grand Hall.
LAST time Dave McAuley challenged for
the WBA flyweight title, the championship
was the Boxing News 'Fight of
the Year', but no doubt both he and the
reigning incumbent, Fidel Bassa, are
hoping that the rematch at the King's
Hall, Belfast, tomorrow
EXACTLY five years to the night Billy Hardy lost in two
rounds to John Hyland in an ABA quarter final, the
redhead from Sunderland took dramatic revenge as he
knocked Hyland out in two rounds to retain his British
bantamweight championship.
A sizzling left hook to the side of Hyland's jaw dropped
him flat on his back and brought the local boy's fans to their
feet at Crowtree Leisure Centre.
GLOUCESTER middleweight hope Johnny Melfah ( l i s t 6'/4lbs)
got the result he wanted as he improved on rival Nigel Benn's time
against American Reggie Miller in the scheduled 10-rounds main
event on a sparsely-attended Ramsden Aird promotion at the
Latchmere Leisure Centre, writes HARRY MULL AN.
FORMER British welterweight champion
Kostas Petrou (lOst lOlbs) returned following
a brief retirement and pounded out a
close and controversial eight threes win
over Gartcosh southpaw Dave McCabe at
the Midlands Sporting Club.
SUMBU KALAMBAY must be one of the most underrated
fighters around. He shocked everyone when he licked
Herol Graham in London and now comes his greatest
victory, the upset, unanimous points win over Mike
McCallum.
FORMER heavyweight champion George Foreman scored his eighth
successive comeback victory but struggled unimpressively before
stopping Dwight Muhammad Qawi, a former world light-heavyweight
and cruiserweight champion, in the seventh of their scheduled
10-rounder.
JOHN DAVISON, the Newcastle bantamweight kept
himself bang on course for Wembley and a place in Britain's
Olympic team by stopping Ritchie Wenton of Liverpool in
the George Wimpey ABA English quarter-finals at the
Leisure Centre.
ENGLAND'S Dene Miller, Weymouth's rugged welterweight,
is out of this year's ABA championships. Miller, an
overwhelming pre-contest favourite, was kicked off the
Wembley trail by Navy novice Robert Wileman during the
Combined Services-Western Counties George Wimpey
ABA quarter-final stage at the Military Boxing Centre,
Normandy Barracks.
