REFEREE Sid Nathan's decision to stop Brazilian import
Manuel Clay Almedia after 2 mins 37 sees of the seventh of a
scheduled 10-rounder against Wandsworth's Gary Mason
was met with a storm of booing from the crowd at York
Hall.

UNBEATEN Rochdale light middlewight Derek Wormald
closed in on the British title with an unsatisfactory cut eye
win over Midlands champion John Ashton at Oldham
Sports Centre.
Wormald ( list ) won their official eliminator after two
minutes 11 seconds of the fourth round as blood spilled
from a cut on Ashton's left eyebrow, but had to get up from
a first round knockdown to do it.

ROY SKELDON won a marvellous battle of craggy old
warriors when he outpointed Tommy Taylor over 10
gruelling rounds for the Midlands light-heavyweight title
at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

WHILE Shawn O'Sullivan's career is finished, Canada's
other silver medallist at the Los Angeles Olympics,
heavyweight Willie DeWit, kept his own alive with the
unanimous points win over Henry Tillman at Edmonton,
Alberta.
DeWit has a loyal following, a crowd of about 7,500
turning out to see him avenge his Olympics defeat against
Tillman even though it must have been clear to any close
observer of the game that neither fighter was going
anywhere.
