DOUBLE title status underlines the quality of the
British and Commonwealth championship between Tee
Jay (Akay) and Glenn McCrory at Latchmere Leisure
Centre, Battersea, next Thursday (January 21).
The cruiserweight poundage, newest of the British —
and European — championship divisions has taken a
while to establish itself in the nature of things. It is
often like this.

BRITISH light-welterweight champion Lloyd Christie
hopes to re-establish himself in the public eye following his
minor hiccup against Del Bryan last month when he takes
on American import Joey Ferrell at the Cocks Moor
Leisure Centre, Kings Heath, Birmingham on Tuesday.
Christie lost an eight-round decision to Bryan, the
Midlands Area welterweight champion, when he took the
overweight match at a week's notice. He boxed without
snap to go down clearly on points without ever being hurt or
getting into the fight.

ALTHOUGH Pernell Whitaker is favoured to beat Jose
Luis Ramirez when they meet for the World Boxing
Council lightweight title in Paris on March 12, I'm not sure
who I fancy to win the all-southpaw clash.
Whitaker has youth and speed, Ramirez staying power
and seasoning.

CANADA'S Shawn O'Sullivan was overwhelmed and stopped in the
11th round by rugged veteran Luis Santana in their scheduled
12-rounder for the vacant North American Boxing Federation welterweight
title at Bally's casino hotel in a crushing defeat that puts his ring
future in serious doubt.
The 25-year-old O'Sullivan,

ISLINGTON middleweight prospect Michael Watson takes
a huge step up in class when he meets American Don Lee in
the 10-round main event on the Mike Barrett-Mickey Duff
show at Wembley Grand Hall on February 3.
It's a seemingly bizarre match, and one that overshadows
the 12 rounder between Gary Cooper and Michael Harris
for the vacant British light-middleweight title on the same
show.
