A NEW twist has developed in the saga of Sugar Ray
Leonard's bid to become the first man to win world titles
at five different weights. Leonard's teasing tactics and
fake retirement ploys culminated in last month's formal
announcement that he would be fighting WBC lightheavyweight
champion Don Lalonde of Canada for both
that title and the the newly inaugurated WBC super
middleweight crown.
MIGUEL "HAPPY" LORA of Colombia retained
his World Boxing Council bantamweight
title for the seventh time with a unanimous, bloody
12-round decision win over veteran former champion
Albert Davila at the Inglewood Forum, but
the fight was marred by controversy.
Two bottles, diagnosed as containing sugar
water, were confiscated from the Colombian's
corner during the fight, also a packet of what
appeared to be sugar.
FORMER welterweight superfight rivals Sugar Ray
Leonard andThomas Hearns will both be boxing for
versions of the world super middleweight titles later
this year as each seeks to become a five-time world
champion.
THE International Boxing Federation announced on
Monday their plans to create a new controlling body
in British boxing, to be known as IBF UK.
The move comes after a meeting last Friday
attended by around 35 Board of Control licence
holders. Simon Block, assistant secretary of the
British Boxing Board of Control, attended as an
observer.
