FORMER world featherweight
champion Barry McGuigan is at
last ready to pick up the pieces of
his career.
McGuigan this week saw the conclusion
of one of the most protracted
manager-boxer arguments in recent
history — and now looks certain to
return to the ring next month.
The Irishman had been in dispute
with former manager Barney Eastwood
since the loss of his title in June
1986.

COMMONWEALTH Light-welterweight champion Tony
Laing scored the quickest win of his career when he
knocked out Swansea southpaw Stanley Jones in just 20
seconds of round one in their 10-round main event at the
Town Hall.
The first two right hands that Laing threw missed, but the
third landed — with dramatic effect. It catapulted Jones
across the ring and down flat on his back, his head hitting
the floor badly.

BILLY HARDY makes the first defence of his British
bantamweight title when he takes on John Hyland of
Liverpool at the Crowtree Leisure Centre, his home town
Sunderland on Thursday (March 17).
The fight was originally scheduled to take place at the
same venue late last year, but was put back because of a
hand injury to the champion.

FORMER ABA flyweight champion Steve Nolan continued
his inspiring comeback as a lightweight with a display
of class and craft in comprehensively outscoring Barking
puncher Paul Harvey before a packed York Hall.
