In one of the most shocking upsets for years, Bronx
underdog Iran Barkley stopped Thomas Hearns in three
rounds to win the WBC middleweight title at the Hilton
Hotel's indoor arena.
Hearns, the only man ever to win world titles at four
different weights, was a 4-1 favourite to retain the title he
had won in the Hilton car park last October with a fourth
round stoppage of Juan Domingo Roldan, but one single
right hand from Barkley made a mockery of those odds.
THE Las Vegas fans had something
to cheer about when locallybased
Roger Mayweather retained
his WBC light-welterweight title
with a split 12-round decision over
official number one contender
Harold Brazier of South Bend,
Indiana.
ITALIAN-based African Patrizio Sumbu Kalambay makes the second

The bout takes place at Ravenna, and it will be the first time Sims has
fought outside the United States.
FORMER World Boxing Assocition light-middleweight
champion Davey Moore died in a freak accident at the

Moore, who would have been 29 on Thursday (June 9),

his drive and was crushed to death beneath the wheels.
Able Abel, Moore's trainer for the past few
years, said Moore slipped on the wet ground while trying to
stop the runaway vehicle after it broke loose. Moore was
then dragged downhill under the vehicle.
FORMER world heavvweight champion GEORGE FOREMAN
now meets CARLOS HERNANDEZ, a Cuban-Horn
fighter from New Jersey, in a scheduled 10-rounder at
Atlantic City on June 26. Hernandez replaces original choice
Jeff Jordan and is considered a step-up in class from many of
the opponents Foreman has faced in his comeback.
In his last fight, in June of last year, Hernandez was
disqualified in the seventh against Razor Ruddock when he
threw Ruddock down.
