JAMES "BUDDY" McGIRT landed a big right hand to flatten Howard
Davis in the first round at the Felt Forum, downstairs at Madison Square
Garden, to make a sensational first defence of his IBF light-welterweight
title.
Davis, the 32-year-old former Olympic lightweight gold medallist, and
twice unsuccessful challenger for the WBC lightweight title, said
afterwards: "This probably was my last fight."
He took the fight as a substitute for Meldrick Taylor, whose camp
requested a postponement/'I had to shed 14lbs in three weeks," Davis said,
"and it left me a little weak. Still, no excuses. Buddy is a terrific puncher."
It had been widely anticipated that McGirt might have to do a lot of
chasing and wear down Davis in this last scheduled 15-round fight in the
United States, with the IBF
MICHAEL NUNN answered the doubters as he
destroyed Frank Tate in the ninth of their scheduled
15-rounder at Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion to win
the IBF middleweight title.
Detractors said the 25-year-old Nunn was too
defensive, couldn't punch and lacked heart, despite
his undefeated record.
Wilfredo Gomez, Puerto Rico's former three
time world champion, launched his comeback
as a lightweight after a 26-month layoff and
stopped Mario "Polvorita" Gonzalez of Mexico
in the sixth of their scheduled 10-rounder at the
Convention Centre.
AMERICA'S amateur boxers look like having a hard time
repeating the success of previous teams when they go to
Seoul Olympics in late September, judging by their box-offs
at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, on July 16-17.
Established stars like featherweight Kelcie Banks and
welterweight Kenny Gould qualified for the team along
with some talented youngsters, but most observers felt the
squdd was clearly inferior to the all-conquering ones of 1976
and 1984.
HEAVYWEIGHT ROCKY BURTON was
rewarded for his fine performance in Cologne
in June against Mario Guedes by being
nominated as official challenger for Al Malcolm's
Midlands Area title.
Burton had Guedes down twice but went on
to lose a close decision over six rounds.
Promoter Johnny Griffin will now try to make
the match with Malcolm for the new season.
