Leonard sued
MORE writs are flying about. Bjorn Rebney, former
president of Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing, filed a $10m
lawsuit last week. It is against NBC's boxing reality
show The Contenders.
Rebney's complaint is that NBC enticed Leonard to
be a part of the programme and this led to Sugar Ray
Leonard Boxing folding and the end of his partnership
with the former world champion.
Leonard has joined the show, which has yet to air,
as a consultant.
Juan Carlos Gomez, the undefeated Cuban heavy
who signed last year for Leonard, is now a promotional
free agent.
YOUNG Kevin Mitchell, the unbeaten West Ham
puncher now undefeated in seven, has two fights
lined up in a week next month.
First, talented Kevin is scheduled to box at York Hall,
Bethnal Green on June 5 when Matt Skelton defends
his Commonwealth heavyweight title, then he appears
at the MEN Arena show seven days later.
No opponents have been named for the 19-year-old,
but I doubt the first will be particularly demanding.
Duran switch
JAMIE MOORE defends his Commonwealth lightmiddleweight
title against Ghana's Ossie Duran - the
Commonwealth welter champ - in Belfast on June 26
as chief support to Brian Magee's clash with Robin Reid.
Duran was supposed to face Takaloo for the vacant
WBU 11st belt in Bethnal Green a few weeks ago until
the Margate man pulled out injured.
GHANA has a reputation
for producing tough
fighters with immense
heart and courage. But
since the heady days
when Azumah Nelson reigned
supreme, the West African nation
has struggled to produce fighters
of the highest calibre.
Moves are afoot to change this.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has
developed the world's first boxing league
as a way to fund the country's boxing
infrastructure and nurture its abundant
talent.
