Moses tragedy
THE list of fatal or severe injuries to boxers in
Indonesia continues. On January 13 in Jakarta, 20-
year-old light-flyweight Antonius Moses was
knocked out in the eighth round of a punishing
fight with Kaichon Sor Vorapin of Thailand.
Moses, undefeated in 15 starts (one draw), was
counted out, but never regained consciousness. He
was taken to hospital, where for four hours
surgeons operated to remove a clot from the right
side of his brain. On Monday, however, he passed
away.
Last year in Indonesia there were three fatalities
in the ring, two involving professionals and one
amateur.
Tapia fever
JOHNNY TAPIA. nearing the end of a
remarkable career, is booked to fight Frankie
Archuleta in Las Vegas, New Mexico on March 5.
It will be a 10-round contest at the Highlands
University Wilson Complex. Tapia hasn't fought
since last August, when outscoring Carlos
Contreras.
Already tickets are selling fast. It was reported
that $20,000 worth had been sold as of a week
ago.
Vincent-Dhami
JIMMY VINCENT, the rugged Brummie who
complained he was the victim of a poor decision
when outpointed by David Barnes for the vacant
British welterweight title last summer, is going to
have to earn another crack.
Vincent had the chance to go straight back in
against Barnes, but instead opted for a vacant
WBU title clash with Eamonn Magee, which he lost
clearly on points.
Now Jimmy must face former domestic champ
Harry Dhami in a final eliminator for the British
crown before the end of April, with purse bids to be
called for February 11 if terms cannot be agreed.
Danny tragedy
THE fiercely cold weather across parts of the
United States has claimed the life of 34-year-old
former Dominican flyweight contender Danny
"Bazooka" Nunez.
Nunez's exciting style saw him win 27 of 30
fights, 19 inside the limit, but he had nothing to
show for it and was reportedly living in poverty
when the extreme weather conditions got to
him.
Danny's final contest saw him lose in 11 for
the WBA title in Thailand against Saen Sor
Ploenchit in December 1994. Nunez turned pro in
the Dominican Republic but in 1992 relocated to
the US.
BERMONDSEY-December 12
• HOWLS of understandable derision greeted the
raising of Cliff Meeks' hand on the Fisher show at
the Downside Settlement, Druid Street.
Eltham's Meeks was gifted a majority verdict over
fellow-debutant Shaun Currie (Fisher), though only
those two judges who voted for Meeks know why.
Son of former British heavyweight champion
Hughroy Currie, Shaun built up a commanding lead
going into the final stanza of a bright three-twos.
A mandatory toll handed Meeks in the dying seconds
surely clinched Currie's victory, but it wasn't to be.
Young Shaun shouldn't too despondent - these
things happen. Cliff wasn't bad either.
