Couch takes a risk
• JANE COUCH has her title rematch with Jaime
Clampitt on December 10 - the night before Vitali
Klitschko-Danny Williams in Las Vegas - in Foxwoods,
Connecticut.
Couch also promotes in Bristol on December 2 and,
surprisingly, will take a warm-up on that. Risky.
She says of the American trip: "I'm just annoyed
Danny's fight has been moved to Las Vegas from
New York. From Foxwoods, I could have gone to
New York the next day to watch him."
Couch beat Clampitt in June over 10 excellent
rounds at the same Foxwoods venue.
Howard dream fight looks on
• HOWARD EASTMAN'S chance to fight for the world
middleweight title against BERNARD HOPKINS
may have arrived at long last.
Hopkins (right) had intended to make his 20th
defence in February against Felix Sturm.
But with Sturm now likely to box Felix Trinidad
on March 12, Hopkins is without an opponent.
Seeing as Eastman has been named the WBC's
mandatory challenger and leading contender
Jermain Taylor is fighting William Joppy on
December 4, it makes sense for Hopkins-Eastman.
I've heard from good authority the Londoner
will get his shot in America on February 19.
Oscar De La Hoya, Hopkins' last opponent, may
even promote it.
Vanda off hook
• AMERICAN light-middle Matt Vanda has had a
lucky escape.
Charges on drug violations were dropped against
him because authorities hadn't followed the required
protocol in order to search his apartment in St Paul,
Minnesota.
That search led police discovering cocaine, $10,000
in cash and a loaded shotgun.
Vanda, 26, and his flatmate were arrested and
charged. But in October a judge ruled that the evidence
could not be used on the grounds mentioned above.
A relieved Vanda said: "Going to prison would be no
fun. There would be no more boxing and that's how I
make my living."
He scored a win last Friday in St Paul - his first
since losing his unbeaten record in August.
• LEE MEAGER, wearing a woolly
hat to protect from colds, shared
a few laughs with stablemate Carl
Froch at ringside.
Meager meets Danny Hunt for
the English lightweight crown
tonight (November 19) in the
first-ever fight between a Mick
Hennessy and Frank Warren boxer.
Earlier, Froch had brought Repton
amateur Andrew Wallace ringside
for a chat. They know each other
from the amateur circuit (boxed
for England together).
Wallace tried to go pro with
Hennessy.
• ARMY host London at the SAS
base in Hereford tonight (Nov 19).
LINE-UP (Army names first): 53:
Spong v Pettitt. 57: Sagar v Bhatia. 61:
Stead v Shinkwin. 61: Lawler v Grange.
68: Taylor v McDonagh. 69: Flournoy v
Ekundayo. 68: Belfour v Skehill. 69:
Bebbington v Backu. 69: Copsey v
Jamal Morrison. 84: Richardson v
Sadler. 70: Briggs v Webb.
• ASHBOURNE ABC returned
to the Green Man Royal Hotel on
October 15 for their second show
since being reformed last season
by former Kent ABA man Lance
Mason and his wife Sharon.
The two Ashbourne lads on the bill
performed well but missed out on
majority decisions.
