Nelson update
• JOHNNY NELSON'S mandatory WBO cruiser title
defence against Italian Vincenzo Cantatore. postponed
from this month when the challenger became ill, will
now take place in Rome in February or March.
It's a difficult defence, though the veteran
Yorkshireman has an excellent track record on the
road, scoring wins in Germany, Denmark, Australia,
America and Thailand.
Witter v Branco
• PURSE bids for Junior Witter's mandatory European
light-welterweight title defence against world-class
Italian Gianluca Branco, who earlier this year took
Arturo Gatti 12 solid rounds in Atlantic City, have been
won by London promoter Mick Hennessy.
He says he hoped to stage the bout around February.
The promoter's plan is for the winner to face the
winner of Gatti-Floyd Mayweather, which may happen
in the summer. Witter-Branco would effectively be a
WBC title eliminator.
Hennessy is also eyeing Omar Sheika as a possible
foe for British and Commonwealth super-middleweight
champ Carl Froch. Sheika recently gave IBF champ
Jeff Lacy a torrid time over 12 rounds.
Chad stops Carl
MASHANTUCKET, Connecticut
- December 10
• Rising middle CHAD DAWSON scored
a decent win when he forced former
world title challenger CARL DANIELS to
retire after seven rounds at Foxwoods.
Dawson is now 16-0 (11). He dropped
Daniels in the sixth.
The IWBF light-welter belt Britain's Jane
Couch was rather harshly stripped of last
week stayed vacant when Jaime Clampitt
and Eliza Olson battled to a 10-round draw.
Scores were 96-94 Clampitt, 96-94 Olson
and 95-95.
Couch was supposed to box Clampitt here
but pulled out in the week of the bout with
illness. Jane had won the IWBF belt from
Clampitt in June.
Clampitt-Olson was also a rematch. Jaime
won their first bout (October 2003) on points.
2004 US super-heavyweight Olympian
Jason Estrada (17st 10lbs) turned pro and
scored a comfortable four-round decision
over Joseph Kenneth Reyes (17st 5lbs),
who was down in the second.

More amateurs
SOME weeks ago I put pen to paper to
request the amateur pages be increased from
four to six. This has not materialised.
I cannot understand why it hasn't, because
most weeks you inform us of results and
information that will appear in a later issue,
due to lack of space.
Amateur boxing is on the up, with the BBC
pledging its support. Surely my own trade
paper can do the same? As I stated before,
