Ojay: this is easy
THE same night 40-year-old Carl Thompson rallied
to defeat young favourite David Haye at Wembley,
Watford's Ojay Abrahams, also 40, was in Liverpool
doing his usual thing - taking a hopeful the distance.
Abrahams lost on points over four rounds to Paul
Smith, having taken the match at two days' notice.
But Ojay, who stays in shape, said the young guns
around today aren't improving. "I played with Smith,"
he claimed. I touched him early and he left me alone.
"I even got off my stool between the third and
fourth rounds and gave the ringcard girl a kiss. The
crowd loved it.
"It's the easiest money I've earned, but I couldn't
dream of playing around with the likes of Darren
Dyer [whom Ojay defeated by knockout 10 years ago]
"I'm loving life and boxing. I'm always in training
and shape. But how can I be so happy after a loss?
It's like a game to me - that's how."
Upon hearing the Thompson-Haye result, Ojay, who
has a full-time job in security, said: "I'm glad for Carl.
I thought Haye would beat him. But Carl's doing a lot
for us 40-year-olds. He's an old man and had it hard."

Pressure on Howard
HOWARD EASTMAN'S European middleweight title
defence against Jorge Sendra of Spain in Nottingham
on September 24 has taken on greater importance.
This week Eastman (above) was nominated to
box undefeated American Jermain Taylor in a final
eliminator for the WBC title held by Bernard Hopkins.
Purse bids will be opened at the WBC Convention
in Thailand next month, assuming Eastman defeats
Sendra.
Howard co-features at Nottingham with stablemate
and Commonwealth super-middleweight champ Carl
Froch taking on Damon Hague for the vacant British
12st belt vacated by injured Tony Dodson.

New foe for Bowe
RIDDICK BOWE has a new opponent for his
comeback in Oklahoma next weekend (Sept 25).
He now meets 32-year-old journeyman Marcus
Rhode, who has been stopped by just about every
contender over the past decade.
Rhode replaces Frank Edmundson and is probably
a marginal improvement, but that isn't saying much.
Bowe's camp clearly wants to ease him back slowly.
The 32-year-old Rhode started his career in 1995
with 14 straight wins. He's had 59 fights, losing 25
and drawing one. Of his 29 wins, 25 have come inside.
But he's lost his last four, three inside. Kevin McBride,
Audley Harrison victim Rob Calloway, Lou Savarese,
Andrew Golota, Vitali Klitschko, Shannon Briggs and
Lamon Brewster have all beaten him in quick time.
Bowe, who is weighing around 19st, intends to box
15 times in the next 18 months. "I'm thinking more
about longevity," he said. "When I get the title [again],
I want to hold on to it."
Janks Morton and not Buddy McGirt is training him.
Morton used to work with Sugar Ray Leonard.

Jones link
• MUNDINE trained with Roy
Jones in the US for this fight and
it showed. "I've never prepared
better for a fight," he said.
He put one over big national
rival Danny Green, who spent
the night in hospital suffering
from dehydration after failing
to stop Sullivan in March.
Green won on points over 10
rounds that night.
The only other man to have
stopped Sullivan is fellow-New
Zealander Sililo Figota (I ko 9) in
1993. He has long retired.

Haroon also netted silver, not gold
• IN our Olympic coverage we said 13-year-old HAROON KHAN won a Schoolboy
title last season. In fact Haroon, like big brother Amir at the Olympics, was beaten
in the final. That was at Class 1 36 kgs against GEORGE LANGLEY of Repton.
Haroon did win a Four Nations Schoolboy title, though (as did Langley, at a
higher weight
