Eubank reason
I CHRIS EUBANK couldn't make the Board's 75th
anniversary bash in Cardiff earlier this month because
he's been on the road doing his one-man show.
"An evening with Chris Eubank" hit six venues at the
end of June/early July - Hayes (Middlesex), Croydon,
Newark, Harlow, Worthing and Swindon.
The poster claimed, "You can't help but leave
inspired".
I had a call from Luton trainer Jack Lindsay, who
said former British and European welterweight king
Henry Rhiney had been in touch to apologise for not
attending the Board's get-together.
Rhiney had family issues to deal with - his father
wasn't well. Jack said: "Henry felt uncomfortable about
it [not attending]. But he sounded perky. He asked
about [former opponents] Trevor Francis and Kirkland
Laing, but I didn't know.
"Henry weighs about 12st 7lbs nowadays. He
finished his career as a light-middle."
Grant v Terrance
• MICHAEL GRANT, once regarded as the future of
heavyweight boxing, barely gets any attention since
Lennox Lewis demolished him in two rounds at
Madison Square Garden, New York in April 2000.
The 31 -year-old American giant, beaten only three
times (also by Jameel McCline and Dominick Guinn) in
42 starts, is quietly working his way back and boxes
Terrance Lewis over 10 rounds in Oakland, California
on July 29.
The co-feature on Cedric Kushner's show, also over
10 rounds, features Ray Austin against Lovy Page.
See you, Paulie
• PAULIE AYALA has officially retired
following his defeat by Marco Antonio
Barrera last month.
Ayala won 'world' titles at bantam and
super-bantam and can tell his grandkids he
fought the best of his time - from Johnny
Tapia at bantam to Erik Morales at feather.
He lost only three times in 38 fights - all
to 'world' champions. The Texan southpaw
was a class act both in and out of the ring.
Why isn t he on top funding?
• ASTONISHINGLY, Amir Khan Is not receiving the top Lottery funding
available. It is obviously a bone of contention.
Here is a young man about to represent his country - no, the whole of Great
Britain - in one of the toughest sports and he is on Class B funding, which is
£1,200 a month.
That sounds a lot but is soon eaten up. What about the petrol for the drive down
to London last week, for instance? Class A is the top money bracket.
When a boxer qualifies for the Olympics - and make no mistake, that is a
gruelling procedure - he should receive every penny available in his quest for
glory. One could tell last week that Amir was a bit hurt that he seemingly wasn't.
Over to you, ABA.
• FRANK BRUNO will be accompanying
Finchley ABC on their annual trip to
Las Vegas this September, writes TC.
The excellent north London outfit this
year take a team of 14 which will include
proven club performers such as Joe
Smythe Jnr, Grant Skehill and Liam
Shinkwin.
Having Bruno along with them will
provide a massive boost for morale, of
course.
• AMATEUR boxing in York is ready to bounce
off the ropes after looking out for the count.
The Minster city's only amateur club, All Saints
ABC, was teetering on the brink of being knocked
out after failing in its long search for a new home.
The previous tenancy at North Street was coming
to an end after nearly 40 years, due to the sale of the
property.
