Tarver bankrupt
K GOING into the biggest fight of his career tomorrow
(see pages 12-13), light-heavyweight Antonio Tarver
has disclosed that he is filing for bankruptcy under
Chapter 11.
This means Tarver would have to seek the permission
of the Bankruptcy Court of Tampa before making any
decisions and formulate a plan determining which bills
he can repay, fully or partially.
Tarver, who will earn $2m for challenging Roy Jones
this weekend, owes $945,682 to 20 creditors. Of that,
$367,000 is owed to the IRS (Internal Revenue Service),
$278,087 to promoter Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing Inc,
$60,000 to the Mandalay Bay Hotel and $36,000 to
Don King Productions.
Wayne returns
WAYNE McCULLOUGH, former WBC bantamweight
champion, was scheduled to return to Britain on
Monday to begin final preparations for a June 19
match on the same card as when Audley Harrison next
boxes.
McCullough will be in England before returning to
his native Belfast, where he will do his training.
The Northern Irishman, already in good shape and
doing his hard sparring, hopes it will lead to regular
matches. Ideally, he wants to fight every six weeks,
but Wayne admits it's tough to get motivated for
smaller bouts.
He said he was offered a fight with Paulie Ayala for
June but, two days after accepting it, it was announced
the Texan would box Marco Antonio Barrera.
Rigby returns
TWO former British champions shake off the rust on
Wally Dixon's dinner show at the Midland Hotel in
Manchester tomorrow week (Saturday May 22).
They are ex-lightweight king Wayne Rigby and
former feather ruler Gary Thornhill. Wayne hasn't
boxed since late in 2002 while Thornhil boxes for the
first time since last August.
The diners should enjoy watching them try to trap
Brendan Ingle "runners" Tony Montana and Danny
Thorpe respectively.
Victory is no certainty for either ex-champ.
Heavyweight Hamsho
• AMONGST the crowd at the final press conference
for the Juan Manuel Marquez-Manny Pacquiao fight
last weekend, carrying considerably more weight
than in his fighting prime, was former two-time world
middleweight title challenger Mustafa Hamsho (see
picture below).
The New York-based Syrian was with former trainer
Al Certo, who coaches Hasan Al, the Dane who boxed
on the show and is now promoted by Murad Muhammad.
Hamsho, one tough man in his day, worked in the
corner on fight night, handing up the bucket between
rounds.
Gifford jailed
• FORMER Immingham lightmiddle
Brian Gifford has been
jailed for four and a half years
at Hull Crown Court.
Gifford, 31, was co-defendant in
a case which saw Nazi sympathiser
Thomas Jackson (37) given seven
years in prison for throwing a petrol
bomb at a Bangladeshi man.
Jackson, who owned stamps
featuring Hitler and swastikas,
threw the flaming missile at Unysur
Rahman, 20, on Christmas Eve last
year.
Gifford had his last pro bout in
February 2002, having won just
one of 15 contests (two draws).
