• A SHOWDOWN at lightweight between WBO
champ Acelino Freitas and Diego Corrales, who
captured that organisation's super-featherweight
belt left vacant by the Brazilian, is in the works
for June 19.
Talks between Gary Shaw, Corrales' promoter,
and Art Pelullo, who represents Freitas, have
been on-going and HBO have confirmed their
interest in a potentially explosive match-up.
Freitas is undefeated in 35 with all but four wins
coming inside, whereas Corrales has two losses
from 40 fights but has won 31 by the short route.
In March, Corrales scored a career-best win
when outboxing Cuban Joel Casamayor, whose
only previous defeat was by Freitas.
Freitas' trainer Oscar Suarez said his man
would come for a punch-up against a man
whose chin is clearly his weakness.
"We'd come to trade," he said. "It's not a
fight likely to go the distance. Acelino is more
than ready for it. He'll knock out Corrales."
Arguello affront
• LEGENDARY Nicaraguan Alexis Arguello
has taken legal action through the courts in
Los Angeles against Electronic Arts, a video
game publisher, for using his image without his
permission. The game, Knockout Kings, has
Arguello as one of many fighters.
Alexis said he only knew about it when a
fan asked if he'd autograph a copy of the game.
The boxer's suit seeks damages and that
existing copies of the game be collected and
impounded.
EA Sports, Nintendo's US arm, are planning
to bring out a new boxing game this year titled
Fight Night 2004.
Skelton latest
I s MATT SKELTON is looking impressive according
to several sources ahead of his April 24 British
and Commonwealth heavyweight title challenge
to Michael Sprott in Reading.
One report claimed the English champ from
Bedford - who is in training camp in a naval base
in Portsmouth - had flattened a Russian sparring
partner, leaving him out cold for 20 minutes.
It could all be hype ahead of the fight, but it's
not a match that needs a great deal of dressing.
Tower's ready'
• FRANK MALONEY, manager of Camden bantam
Martin Power, says his former amateur star is
ready for the British title.
Power, winner of all 13 paid outings (six inside),
was supposed to box Jamie Yelland at Bethnal
Green a week ago (April 1) for the vacant Southern
Area title. However, Yelland pulled out after injuring
his shoulder.
Power destroyed Fred Janes instead (see pages
8-9).
Frank also manages Kevin Lear, former WBU
super-featherweight champ who was supposed to
return to action on the same Bethnal Green bill
after a long spell out with a shoulder injury.
But the misery continues for Lear, who broke
his finger.
• REPTON'S annual trip to Belfast to take on the
Dockers club produced a 5-4 win for the Londoners
on March 26.
With head of coaching Tony Burns leading Joe Young

this dinner show were Bobby Beck and Darren Barker.
Starlets Ryan Pickard and Gary Barker both travelled
to Belfast but could not be matched.
