Eastman gets WBC's backing
• POSITIVE news for HOWARD EASTMAN, who last week was made
mandatory contender for Bernard Hopkins' WBC middleweight title.
Hopkins, of course, is undisputed champ and wants to make at least one more
defence (his 20th). But it remains to be seen whether the WBC will permit him to do so
against someone other than Eastman.
Eastman was named to box undefeated American Jermain Taylor in a final eliminator
but Taylor pulled out, instead agreeing to face William Joppy in Texas on December 4.
The WBC then voted unanimously for Eastman to become the mandatory.
It is possible the WBC will allow Hopkins the chance to defend his undisputed crown
against former WBO king Felix Sturm in February on condition the winner face Eastman.
Alternatively, Hopkins may vacate the WBC belt or find himself stripped, leaving
Eastman to box the next highest-rated challenger for the title.
Sat beside Oscar De La Hoya at a show in Hollywood, Florida last weekend, Hopkins
said of his future: "There will be some special announcements coming up soon."
Mayorga in dock
• RICARDO MAYORGA has been told he must stand
trial, accused of rape, in Nicaragua on November 25.
The former world welterweight champion who was
stopped in eight by Felix Trinidad in New York last
month, is accused of sexually assaulting a girl in
Managua in September, when he was supposed to be
in training for Trinidad.
Mayorga denied the charges and days later showed
up in Las Vegas, where he continued training for Trinidad.
A Nicaraguan judge, however, last week denied a
motion for the charges against Mayorga to be dropped.
He also warned Mayorga for missing previous court
dates and leaving the country without giving notice as
required under his bail agreement.
Cotto is on
• MIGUEL COTTO, the watchable Puerto Rican lightwelter,
is confirmed as chief support to Danny Williams'
WBC heavyweight title challenge against Vitali Klitschko
in Las Vegas on December 11.
As hinted last week, unbeaten Cotto defends his WBO
belt against former holder, hard hitter Randall Bailey.
Also on the card is Carlos Hernandez, former IBF
super-featherweight champ, plus Javier Jauregui,
ex-IBF lightweight king, against Carlos Navarro.
