McLarnin birthplace
• USUALLY, I'd trust the Ring Record Book as a highly
reliable source, but expert on Irish boxing, Patrick
Myler, informs me I had the date of birth wrong for
Jimmy McLarnin in my recent tribute to the former
world welterweight champ, who died last month.
Myler has a copy of McLarnin's birth certificate on
which it says Jimmy was born on December 19,1907
in Hillsborough, County Down, not the Dublin suburb of
Inchicore, again as listed in the Ring Record Book.
That means McLarnin was coming up for his 97th
birthday, not 98th.
Evander fights it
• EVANDER HOLYFIELD has officially appealed against
the New York State Athletic Commission's decision to
suspend him.
Holyfield lost last month for the third time in a row
when outpointed by Larry Donald at Madison Square
Garden.
Donald, meanwhile, wants a shot at John Ruiz's
WBA crown. Donald believes it would be the perfect
fight - one fans would like to see.
I don't know anyone who is eager to see either
man perform, but Donald's win over Holyfield keeps
him in the title picture and there aren't too many
heavyweights lining up to take on the awkwardly
effective Ruiz.
So who knows? Promoter Don King may grant
Donald his wish.
Holyfield's trainer Ronnie Shields meanwhile has
said his fighter suffered a back injury in training but
kept it quiet from him.
Corrales targets
• THE lightweight champs are throwing out challenges.
WBO king Diego Corrales said he wants IBF champ
Julio Diaz, but Julio is more likely to face Brazilian
Acelino Freitas.
Corrales has been mentioned as a possible opponent
for Kostya Tszyu at light-welter early next year.
Diaz, meanwhile, is to box in a non-title affair in Sao
Paolo on December 11, when Freitas returns to action
(against Fernando David Saucedo) following his
stoppage loss to Corrales in August.
Silky benefit latest
• LATEST from Paul "Silky" Jones regarding the
benefit night for Leicester's Shaun Cummins.
He says he received a good response from our piece
two weeks ago, so will continue with his mission.
The plan now is to stage the night along with some
amateur bouts - "maybe about eight, not too many,
featuring local clubs" - and to also make it a reunion.
"I've had calls from people I hadn't heard from for
ages, so it will be nice to all meet up for a good cause."
He will come back to us when he has a date and
venue, but it will definitely be in Leicester.
He said Shaun had had a bad week - "he's picked
up a chest infection. That's what happens when you're
paralysed and just sat there. But he's still in good
spirits." Our thoughts are with Shaun.
Silky can be reached on 08707 581414.
