WBC survives
• THE World Boxing Council narrowly avoided
bankruptcy after reaching a settlement with
Germany's Graciano Rocchigiani on August 20.
Four days later the bankruptcy filed by the governing
body in Puerto Rico was terminated. A relieved WBC
president Jose Sulaiman said: "We just got up off the
canvas a few seconds before we were knocked out."
The WBC has kept secret the exact total of the
settlement with Rocchigiani, who successfully took
the WBC to court for demoting him from champion
proper to interim champ back in 1998.
Sulaiman refused, however, to admit the WBC
was guilty. "Even though we have always maintained
our innocence, we want to leave this unpleasant
experience behind," he said.
"We will learn from our mistakes and strive to
improve boxing for the sake of future generations."

Woods consolation
• CLINTON WOODS, shrugging off the disappointment
of missing out on a fight with Joe Calzaghe on October
9, got married to long-time half-Spanish partner Natalia
a week ago (Friday August 27).
The Calzaghe-Woods fight was verbally agreed but,
says Woods' manager Dennis Hobson, Calzaghe's
people changed their minds a couple of weeks later.
Without any assurances that victory would
guarantee Calzaghe a shot at the Johnson-Jones
winner (see separate story), it made little sense for
Joe to take the match - especially as he would have
had to vacate his super-middleweight belt to fight in
any IBF eliminator.
Instead, Calzaghe has held on to his WBO 12st belt
he now defends in Edinburgh next month.

Vanzie steps in
• BOBBY VANZIE now meets Dave Stewart over
eight rounds at Wembley Arena on September 10 -
when Carl Thompson tops against David Haye -
after Peter McDonagh was forced out (against
Stewart) following a car accident (he has whiplash).
McDonagh was to have defended his Southern
Area lightweight title.

What an attitude
CONGRATULATIONS to Amir Khan. He has
been astonishing. I like the fact all he seemed to
care about was beating his opponent and that's
all - not the prospect of future money, fame -
just winning. His attitude was to get the job
done as quickly and neatly as possible. He

NASEEM HAMED rang Khan the day after
his stunning quarter-final victory over the
South Korean. Khan said: "I've never met
Naz but we spoke for about 15 minutes
and he wished me all the best. It was
good of him to ring."
Lennox Lewis also called him, from
New York. He said Khan was brilliant.
