Barney travels
MATTHEW BARNEY, who feels he's had a raw
deal in this country, is off to Australia to try his luck
Down Under.
The WBU light-heavyweight champ will defend
against Jason Delisle in Sydney on June 5, hoping
an impressive display will lead to opportunities
further afield, perhaps in America.
Barney can probably box at any weight between
light-heavy and middle and the Aussies are not
short of talent in those divisions.
Anthony Mundine and Danny Green are worldclass
super-middles and Paul Briggs in line for the
Roy Jones-Antonio Tarver winner at light-heavy.
There's also Sam Soliman, formerly based in
London, but a match between him and Barney
would be a nightmare. They are both tricky, elusive
types.
Manny slip-up?
WAS it a slip of the tongue by Manny Pacquiao
in Los Angeles last week or is the Filipino
southpaw set to box Erik Morales on July 31
should he defeat Juan Manuel Marquez on May 8?
Pacquiao, conqueror of Marco Antonio Barrera,
was in LA to announce next month's riveting
featherweight duel with WBA/IBF 9st champ
Marquez in Las Vegas.
But he said: "This is an important fight and I
have to win if I want Morales on July 31."
It had been understood that WBC super-feather
champ Morales would take on IBF counterpart
Carlos Hernandez on the summer date.
As far as Marquez is concerned any talk about
Morales-Pacquiao is premature.
"There will be fire on May 8," he promised.
"Only in death will I relinquish my belts. Manny is
a great fighter but I am also fighting for my wife,
children, parents and all my country."
Toney bankrupt
APPARENTLY James Toney, recovering from a
ruptured Achilles tendon, is bankrupt. But it was
not a maneoeuvre to split from promoter Dan
Goossen. Toney and Goossen may still work
together when the heavyweight regains full
fitness. In the meantime Toney has re-hired
former manager Stan Hoffman.
Hunter at home
MICHAEL HUNTER will box Mark Payne of
Coventry at Hartlepool Borough Hall on April 16 for
the vacant British super-bantamweight title.
Former heavyweight Dave Garside will promote.
Hunter, a former WBF champ, is hot favourite,
especially boxing in his neck of the woods.
Death of a stalwart
• ALBERT BARTLE, a Welsh amateur boxing
stalwart, has passed away. His age was
unknown but Andrew Evans, who used to box
for him, says he must have been in his 70s.
Bartle used to run the Croeserw ABC near
Maesteg in South Wales and Evans says
them gym was a haven for youngsters in a
rough area full of prefab housing built after
the war.
"He really was a diamond in the rough,"
said Evans, who kindly called us with the
information.
Bartle produced champions at many
levels, notably Joey Thomas and Mike
McCluskey in the late 1960s/early-'70s. He
helped keep the game going for decades -
just another who does his bit for the game
out of the glare of publicity.
May he rest in peace.
McEwan op
• CLOVENSTONE southpaw Craig McEwan,
Scotland's leading welterweight, has bitten
the bullet and had surgery on his damaged
right hand at Glasgow's private Ross Hall
hospital in a bid to make the final Olympic
qualifying event later this month.
That starts in Baku, Azerbaijan on April 26,
lasting until May 3.
"It will be a race against time for Craig to
be fit," said father-coach Rab McEwan.
"But there was no alternative - he couldn't
jab with his right hand."
Cantatore champ
ROME, Italy - March 27
• Italy's VINCENZO CANTATORE won the vacant
European cruiserweight crown with a unanimous 12-
round decision over ISMAEL ABDOUL.
In a nervy fight, Cantatore, who three fights ago
lost in the 10th to Wayne Braithwaite for the vacant
WBC title, picked it up as the fight progressed to hurt
his man in the 10th.
