Powell for Arthur
WHEN Alex Arthur tries to put together his
career after a shattering stoppage defeat by
Michael Gomez last October, it will be with Dean
Powell in his corner.
The former British super-featherweight champ
will continue working with coach Freddie Roach in
Los Angeles as well - but when the much-indemand
American trainer is unavailable, Powell
will deputise.
Alex had a former amateur trainer in his corner
for the Gomez fight when Roach couldn't be there.
Now for Larsen
CHARLES BREWER, the ever-tough Philadelphia
super-middle who has lost in Europe to Sven Ottke
(twice) and Joe Calzaghe, is coming back for more.
The veteran has agreed to go to Denmark in
February to face southpaw European champion
Mads Larsen in an IBF title eliminator.
There is nothing a crowd enjoys more than a contest
between world-class contestants in which the balance of
power swings from one fighter to the other.
And there's nothing they like less than an unsatisfactory
conclusion.
In this scheduled 12-round IBF super-featherweight title
eliminator, fans at the Mandalay Bay Hotel got both.
Both went down, Corrales twice, before Diego was
rescued after the sixth on the advice - no, on the demand -
of the female ringside physician.
She maintained a hole in Diego's mouth - caused by a
cracking southpaw left in the sixth - was too serious.
Casamayor had assumed command but had been
"stiffened" by a shot just before the bell to end the round.
Corrales was furious with the doctor.
Murphy salute
• WEST HAM comp sec Jimmy Murphy
reckoned McDonald-Marsh was "a great
bout" and that they didn't expect any
favours boxing on McDonald's patch.
"We took it to get a bout - Matthew
hadn't boxed since last year's ABAs.
"It was made at bantam, but Matthew
is still a flyweight."
CORRIE SANDERS won't be punching the
bags for a while. Last month he slipped in
his house and went through a plate-glass
window, resulting in a three-hour operation
and both his hands being put in cast.
He was interviewed in the latest edition of
the South African Boxing World and the
political web which has engulfed him following
his brilliant victory over Wladimir
Klitschko doesn't make for pleasant reading.
It all comes down to money - Corrie says
deals offered by Universum and Don King
"have been a slap in the face".
Tapia claim
A WEEK or so before Christmas Johnny Tapia
was admitted to hospital in New Mexico, where he
has returned to live, following a reported overdose
of pills.
The troubled Tapia, who has dodged death
numerous times and had a history of drug-related
difficulties, was said to be in satisfactory condition.
After coming out of hospital, Tapia claimed he
had simply suffered an allergic reaction to cough
medicine.
Only a year ago he was on a life-support
machine and feared to be close to death after
collapsing at his home from an overdose.
