Boxing News 1975 Memorabilia
IT IS a long time since a domestic featherweight
displayed the type of exciting hitting that won
Vernon Sollas the British championship at the Royal
Albert Hall.
PAT McCORMACK came back from Boston with Press clippings
extolling his fight with Tony Petronelli on March 17.
Pat, former British light-welter champ, was retired by his corner
at the end of the sixth. But he gave Petronelli a rugged argument
and cut his opponent around the eyes in the course of what was, by
all accounts, a tremendous fight.
A COUPLE of years back, Panama stood high in world
boxing with four world champions in ALFONSO FRAZER,
ROBERTO DURAN, NATO MARCEL and ENRIQUE
PINDER.
A country with less than fifty professional boxers could not hope
to sustain that degree of success, and with Marcel and Pinder
having retired and Frazer gone to pieces, only Duran is left.
Roberto continues to look too good for any other lightweight
around and will provide Panama City with a big draw card for some
time yet
VICTOR GALINDEZ, known affectionately in his native Argentina as the
"Leopard," hunts possibly his most tricky prey to date when he defends his World
Boxing Association light-heavyweight title against South African pin-up Pierre
Fourie at Johannesburg's Ellis Park rugby ground tomorrow (Saturday).
THE Welsh Senior Championships were disappointing
last year, and this was reflected in the ABA
Championships where no Welshman secured a title.
HARD-HITTING Empire, Bristol, prospects CHRIS SANIGAR and NICK JENKINS scored
quick wins Over Welsh opposition at Percy Boys' Club.
WELSH lightweight champion ALAN COPP, of Swansea,
proved too experienced for Hartcliffe's MAURICE
LAWRENCE in a sizzling bout on Hartcliffe's show at the
Community Centre.
JAMAICAN lightweight TREVOR JOHNSON ended his bout with airman EDDIE LUM
YOU with a spectacular right hand one second from the end of the first round on the
National Smelting Company promotion at Manor Farm Social Club.
DARLINGTON ABC staged an interesting open show at Skerne
Park in front of 400 spectators. But the promoting club had mixed
luck against boxers from Hull's St Paul's club.
IAN BAKER and COLIN DAVISON dropped points decisions to
PAUL WAKE and A. SHARLOTTE, but the third Darlington boxer,
IAN COLLBECK outpointed A. CROMOND in a close contest.
LYNN bantamweight Gary Davidson didn't have much
time to feel sad after his defeat in the London ABA
Championships by Cornelius Boza-Edwards. The day after
his exit at the Albert Hall Gary was dashing off to Kings
College to take a look at the newly born son his wife Coleen
presented to him.
