OUR onlv current world champion. Stepney's Charlie Magri, puts that
position on the line at Wembley on Tuesday when he defends his
coveted World Boxing Council flyweight tide against Filipino Frank
Cedeno over 12 rounds.
For likeable Charlie it is a return to the same arena in which he
displayed all that magnificent effort, determination, courage and fierce
punching power to wrest the WBC crown from Eleoncio Mercedes of the
Dominican Republic and make a dream come true.
ROY GUMBS will probably spend the rest of his days
regretting the momentary lapse of concentration which
cost him the British and Commonwealth middleweight
titles, an assured crack at the European championship,
and the likelihood of a world title challenge against Marvin
Hagler.
It came right at the end of the fourth round of an
emotion-charged defence against unbeaten West
Hammer Mark Kaylor, at a time when the fight looked
safely won.
MICHAEL DOKES starts firm favourite to retain
his World Boxing Association heavyweight title
against South Africa's Gerrie Coetzee at the Richfield
Coliseum in Ohio tonight, in a fight that poses
questions.
Dokes, for instance, is known to enjoy the good
life. Will he be in less than perfect condition for the
15-rounder?
ROBERTO DURAN's got plenty to think
about with the big fight coming up against
Marvin Hagler. But he's got a formidable
challenger waiting for him in the lithe
shape of Mike McCallum, the Jamaican
who fights out of New York.
DWIGHT MUHAMMAD QAWI, the former WBC lightheavyweight
champion, put himself in line for a return crack
at undisputed world champion Michael Spinks as he banged
out a split 10-rounds decision over Johnny Davis in their
rubber match at the Sands casino hotel.
Qawi, the former Dwight Braxton, was having his first
bout since being outpointed by Spinks last March. Spinks
was at the ringside and said he would be happy to give Qawi
a rematch.
RAY "BOOM BOOM" MANCINI battled through eight tough rounds before connecting
with a big left hook to flatten southpaw Orlando Romero of Peru in the ninth round
at Madison Square Garden to retain his WBA lightweight title.
What was expected to be an easy defence for the 22-year-old Mancini turned out to be a
war. He was caught by jarring left handers to the chin and things looked worrying for the
champion when he was cut over the left eye late in the eighth of the scheduled 15-
rounder.
A WESTERN Counties ABA side head across the North Sea
to Holland today (Friday), led by their most popular amateur
boxer for many years — punching Postman Peter Han-
Ion.
Hanlon, 24, has not boxed since the Commonwealth
Games in Brisbane last year. Then, the Gloucester ABC star
had his gold medal bid eclipsed by Nigeria's Peter Koneyegwachie
who halted Hanlon in the second round.
Now, following a move to a new house and a complete
rest, Hanlon is ready to launch his ring return in Amsterdam
against a Dutch Select team.
Twice ABA featherweight champion, Hanlon is joined in
the 10 man side by two fellow Gloucester men in Roy
Hutchinson and John Melfah.
