WITH Hagler to meet Duran in 1983's biggest-money fight, speculative thoughts turn to the winner
versus Thomas Hearns in a 1984 bonanza battle.
But Hearns wasn't exactly dynamite in outpointing Murray Sutherland, the Scot from Bay City,
Michigan, over NBC-TV from Atlantic City on July 10.
Hearns seemed to hit Murray with his best shots but couldn't drop the raw-boned, lanky Scottish
middleweight.
This suggests that perhaps Hearns isn't a banger against bigger men. But it seems to me that Hearns
has evolved into an impressive ring general rather than the Detroit Hit man who blasted out all those
welterweights up to and including Pipino Cuevas.
IT IS truly amazing how boxing has almost died away m
Spain. A few years ago they were regularly producing
European champions and had two or three good fighters in
most divisions. Now they have Roberto Castanon and very
litde else.
The Spanish Boxing Federation no longer subsidises
promoters, and Spanish TV ignores the sport which almost
guarantees that every show is a loser. As a result the number
of promotions has dropped dramatically, and no upturn is in
view.
LAS VEGAS - July 17: Carlos DeLeon, of Puerto Rico,
won back his WBC cruiserweight title with a one-sided,
unanimous 12 round decision over S. T. Gordon of Las
Vegas before a sparse crowd watching in 100 degrees temperature
in the outdoor Dunes Hotel arena.
The victory avenged a stunning
second round defeat suffered
by DeLeon last year when
losing his title to Gordon.
OLYMPIC, European Championships
and Commonwealth Games teams
make traditional appearances at the
Thomas A'Becket, where fund-raising
appeals are made to provide the boxers
with pocket money.
The professionals take round collection
buckets and the amateurs normally
wind up with a nice few quid
boosted by Fairy Godmother Beryl
Cameron-Gibbons, posing in this picture
with England's team for last year's
Brisbane Games.
They included: John Lyon (Lowe
House); Ray Gilbody (St. Helens); Peter
Hanlon (Gloucester); Jim McDonnell
(St. Pancras); Clyde Mcintosh (Bell
Green); Chris Pyatt (Belgrave); Nick
Coombes (Royal Navy); Jimmy Price
(Holy Name); and Harold Hylton (Brockworth
Viking).
