JEFF CHANDLER talked of moving up in
weight and proving his greatness but the WBA
bantam champ suffered a blow to his image in
what looked a routine non-title match against
Oscar Muniz.
Muniz fought while Chandler got flashy, and
the split points win in favour of Oscar was wellreceived
by the crowd at Atlantic City on July 23.

WHAT a shame that Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, the colourful
WBA lightweight champion, is reduced to fighting Peruvian Orlando
Romero whom he meets at Madison Square Garden in
September.
The unknown Romero is the WBA's top ranked contender and
this qualifies him for a shot at the title.
However, Mancini is a tough and capable fighter who deserves
better opposition than this and matches against Hector Camacho,
Howard Davis, Tony Baltazar and even Jose Luis Ramirez
(whom he has already beaten) would be far more beneficial to
him and would certainly enhance his reputation.

PROFESSIONALS, as well as amateurs, will be shocked by
a closure threat slapped on Downside Settlement, Bermondsey,
which has catered for working class boys since 1908.
The settlement, in Druid Street, houses three clubs - Worth for
schoolboys; Downside for older boys and Fisher for over-17s -
most famous of which is Fisher, whose forte is boxing and football.
Most youth clubs have wardens funded by the ILEA and
Downside Settlement, because of its size, had two. But seven weeks
ago, the head warden left for a post in Jersey and it was then the
Southwark Area Youth Committee dropped their bombshell by
declaring that they may vote not to replace him.
