IT'S true to say that victory in the Olympic Games is no guarantee of success in
professional boxing. It is equally true that disastrous failure in the Games is not the
end of the world.
Anyone doubting that has only to look at Eleoncio Mercedes and Charlie Magri,
two men who are about to contest the ultimate prize of a world tide.
Eleoncio and Charlie travelled to Montreal in 1976 with
high hopes of winning a gold medal in their respective
divisions, and both crashed to defeat.

FOR the third time in a world tide bout, RUBEN CASTILLO
fell short in the stamina department as he was
soundly licked over 12 rounds by WBC featherweight
champ JUAN LAPORTE at San Juan.
In previous championship bids, Castillo, a young
veteran at 25, was stopped in the 11th by Alexis Arguello
and outpointed over 15 by Salvador Sanchez.
These bouts involved the WBC junior-light and
featherweight championships respectively.
Castillo started well in both fights but couldn't keep it
up. The same sort of thing happened in the fight with
Laporte. It's a shame that Castillo lacks the strength and
punch to go with his skills.

IT IS with deep regret that I have to report the probable
demise of the Belfast Ex-Boxers' Association. Secretary
Jackie Briers told me: "The situation is so difficult here. I
tried hard to keep things going when president Barney Ross
was alive, but after he died it was a struggle. There were not
enough interested members, just one or two like Billy
Barnes who helped in keeping things alive, but it seems
hopeless.

COVENTRY won out sensationally over Norwich
when the Midlands and Eastern Counties clashed
before a sell-out crowd at the Kettering Leisure
Centre and COLIN LYNCH and MICHAEL
CHRISTIE from the Triumph ABC produced
knockout punches

QUICKEST winner in the South East London Divisional Championships at
Lewisham Concert Hall on Friday, March 4, was Ian Hosten, from St Peters,
Woolwich, who took less than three rounds to win the light-welterweight title.
Hard-hitting Hosten caused a shock by knocking out Peckham's Mick Kilgallon
in the first round and scoring a second round knockout victory over Croydon's
Steve Nolan (not to be confused with London flyweight champion of the same
name), with a sustained session of dynamic punching.

THE annual Derbyshire v Staffordshire tournmament,
which over the years has raised a staggering amount for
the dependants of policemen maimed or killed while on
duty, takes place on Monday, at Derbyshire Constabulary
HQ, Butterley Hall, Ripley. It's a good show and thus well
worth attending for both reasons.

BRITISH lightweight champion GEORGE FEENEY meets the former Olympic
champion and world tide challenger HOWARD DAVIS, over 10 rounds at San
Remo, Italy on April 10 as part of a double main event to be televised live to the
United States.
On the same show, Ohio welterweight BOBBY JOE YOUNG meets the black
Italian NINO LAROCCA in a final eliminator for the WBA welter tide, held by
Don Curry.
