THE fight between Larry Holmes and Marvis Frazier is
definitely on, it was confirmed last week. The only snag is
that by the time they get in the ring, Holmes will probably
be an ex-champ in the eyes of the World Boxing Council.
The WBC has warned Holmes that if he fights anyone
before meeting their official challenger Greg Page the title
will be vacated.
But the 33-year-old Holmes said last week that he is going
ahead with the fight against Frazier, 22-year-old son of
Smokin' Joe.

IN THE latter days of the Prize Ring there was Dutch
Sam (real name Samuel Elias) who was born in Petticoat
Lane, Whitechapel in 1775. His career as a lightweight
covered 1801 to 1814 and he was regarded as
champion of his class.
His son, Young Dutch Sam, whose real name,
stangely enough, was Samuel Evans, was born at
Wells Street, Ratcliffe Highway, London, in 1808.
He was active as a welter from 1825 to 1834 and also
claimed the championship of his division.
In*America, in the early part of the 19th century,
there was Jacob Hyer and his son, Tom, both of
whom regarded themselves as heavyweight champions
of their country.

REPORTS from Mexico indicate that Carlos Zarate is
planning a comeback. The former WBC bantamweight
champion is 32, and last fought in June 1979 when he lost
his title on a hotly disputed decision to Lupe Pintor.
Carlos is far from being broke, so his return makes little
sense. It is said he will have his first fight in either Los
Angeles or Tokyo.

BARRY ELLIS, 20-year-old holder of the North West
London Division heavyweight title, has applied for a professional
licence, and if successful, will join the growing stable
of Wandsworth manager Tony Lavelle.
Ellis, an engineer in London Transport's Works Division,
is a good class boxer with a solid punch who wears the All
Stars ABC vest.
He won the North West London title by beating Stowe's
Gilbert Alexander in the semi-finals, Alexander being
disqualified in the third round at Tottenham Municipal
Hall.

AUSTRALIAN featherweight prospect Tony Russell (left, beating Meta Bala on points in
Melbourne in May) is understood to be keen to return to his birthplace, London, to pursue his
career under the guidance of Dennie Mancini.
Russell's father Ronnie Russell, a crowd-pleasing pro featherweight of the 1960s, was managed
by Mancini.
Tony is unbeaten to date, but his prospective mentor does not seem keen to publicise him. "I
have no comment at all to make to Boxing \ews," he said when we asked him to confirm the
reports.
Mr Mancini last year refused us permission to do a planned centre-spread feature on his
welterweight Sid Smith, who was at the time a British tide contender.
