GERRIE COETZEE'S victory will have sent South African
fans into ecstacies, but how long will it last when they realise
that Gerrie will not be defending his title at home? After all
of his verbal support for the anti-apartheid groups, there is
surely no way that Don King could promote in South Africa
without showing himself to be a total hypocrite.
There are three immediate possibilities which suggest themselves
for Coetzee and they are defences against Mike Weaver, John Tate
and Pinklon Thomas, as the first two defeated Gerrie in previous
WBA title bouts and Thomas recently held him to a draw. My
money is on Tate getting the shot.

JOE FRAZIER fought the greatest fight of his career
on a March night in 1971 at Madison Square Garden
when Muhammad Ali was unable to float like a butterfly
or sting like a bee. The butterfly's wings in fact,
were crushed, his arrogance, his prophecies and his
unbeaten record destroyed in one hell of a fight.

after having been ostracised from boxing four years
earlier, when stripped of his title and New York
licence for refusing to join the armed forces.

ABA light-welterweight champion David Dent is an elusive
mail when it comes to ring action as many of his opponents
will testify. Dent's slippery skills appear to have left both
England and London selectors somewhat confused lately.
Dent, from the St Pancras club, was included in both the
national side and the regional outfit for matches in the next
two months. However, he appears to have decided to fight
for pay, leaving a berth to fill in both teams.
