THE enemies of boxing were on the attack after the
death of Korean lightweight Duk Koo Kim but the fight
game has weathered many such assaults and will continue
to do so, even though in America there was quite a stir
when their most famous boxing commentator, Howard
Cosell, turned away from the sport.
Why boxing survives and enters a new, megabuck era
of TV with the American pay and cable systems, is
because the sport provides such matchless excitement.
The object is to win, preferably by rendering the other
man incapable of continuing, but it is not the intention to
inflict permanent harm.

THE fight between BOBBY CHACON and RAFAEL
"BAZOOKA" LIMON was so thrilling and
dramatic it could have been scripted in Hollywood.
It qualifies as our number five in the overseas fights
list and many who saw it might have voted it No. 1.
Chacon, 31, former WBC featherweight champ and onetime
golden boy, was the winner on a unanimous 15 round
decision to capture the WBC junior-lightweight tide at the
third try.

FIGHTER of the year in overseas rings for 1982
was Aaron Pryor, and no argument in our view, for
his thrilling win over Alexis Arguello in their great
fight at Miami on November 12.
In retaining his WBA light-welter title and
scoring his 32nd win in a row, Pryor proved what
an outstanding fighter he really is - just as he'd
been telling the world all along.
The victory over Arguello, the sentimental
choice and WBC lightweight champion, was crushingly
achieved in the 14th round after a marvellous
fight with opinions differing as to who was in
front.
