PIERRE COETZER seemed all set to take South African boxing by storm when he
turned professional in Johannesburg on February 5, but the 21-year-old Pretoria
heavyweight has come in for much criticism from the South African media since punching
for pay.
Coetzer, who will meet Steve Gee over eight rounds at the Wembley Sports Pavilion in
Johannesburg tomorrow (Saturday), has taken the criticism in his stride. He is probably
a victim of being over-publicised at the start of his career.
EUROPEAN light-heavyweight champion RUDI
KOOPMANS has hit back at allegations of drugtaking
arising from medical tests after his eighthround
win over German challenger Manfred
Jassman in July.
WHAT was he thinking? What was Floyd Patterson
thinking as he stood within inches of Ingemar Johansson,
while referee Arthur Mercante reeled off the pre-fight instructions
for their return engagement at the Polo Grounds
in New York on June 20th, 1960?
Analysis of Patterson's thoughts at that moment in time is
near impossible, since the man from Waco, North Carolina,
was such an incredibly complex character.
ONCE again it was so near but so far for Colin Jones, whose
hammer blows had Milton McCrory hovering on the brink
of defeat at the Dunes, Las Vegas, outdoor arena.
But McCrory found that little bit extra, and from TV I
thought he deserved the win after 12 thrilling rounds.
McCrory thus succeeds Sugar Ray Leonard as World
Boxing Council welterweight champ.
Jones merits another chance, but McCrory's camp aren't
likely to oblige Eddie Thomas, Jones' manager, by coming
to Wales and having European judges.
In any case, McCrory doesn't want to know about the
Jones boy for at least another year. And who can blame him
after two exhaustingly tough 12-rounders?
