Klitschko-Bean
VITALI KLITSCHKO faces a better grade of opposition
when he next defends his WBA International heavyweight
crown on February 8 at the Volkswagenhalle in
Braunschweig.
The Ukrainian, who has been training in the Canary
Islands over Christmas and New Year, takes on former twotime
'world' title challenger Vaughn Bean.
The only times Bean has moved into world class he has
been beaten, though on each occasion lasted the distance
- against Michael Moorer and Evander Holyfield.
Klitschko has been sparring Kingston-based Nigerian
Jacklord Jacobs, who can't get fights in Britain.
German-based Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez, the WBC
cruiserweight king, boxes on the same show in a heavyweight
10-rounder. Negotiations are taking place for
Gomez to defend against Guyanese dangerman Wayne
Braithwaite later in the year.
Julius joins Peacock
JULIUS FRANCIS has turned a new page in his career at
the age of 37, signing a promotional deal with the
Peacock Gym (having left Frank Maloney).
Now being trained by both Mark Roe and Martin
Bowers, former British and Commonwealth champ Francis
believes he can regain his titles. He is expected to box for
Peacock in March.
Takaloo-Rhodes on
TAKALOO'S WBU light-middleweight title defence
against Ryan Rhodes, twice a failed challenger for
the WBO middleweight crown, will take place at York
Hall, Bethnal Green on March 2.
If victorious, Takaloo said he wants to box new EBU
champion Wayne Alexander. "He's ducking me because
I knocked him out in the gym," said Takaloo.
But Wayne says he doesn't want to box for 'Mickey
Mouse' titles and adds: "Those sparring sessions were
four years ago and Takaloo fails to mention I battered
him the following week [after being floored],
"I'm not the kind who performs well in the gym."
The same card features heavyweight Mathew Ellis
challenging for the WBC International crown against
Russian Dennis Bakhtov.
Neil Sinclair's proposed British welterweight title
defence against Jason Rowland was pulled off the
show, presumably to take place at a later date.
Thornberry for Ottke
SVEN OTTKE will make the next defence of his IBF
super-middle title against Rick Thornberry of
Australia on March 16 in Germany. Thornberry, who
extended a poor Joe Calzaghe in a WBO 12st title
challenger in Cardiff in 1999, will become the
second Aussie in a row Ottke has faced following the
German's impressive victory over Anthony Mundine.
Dismissing amateur defeat
•
BRODIE lost to Hamed as a 17-year-old amateur and remembers: "I was fighting
for the Ancoats Club then and he stopped me when my headguard slipped over
my eyes and he caught me with a good shot.
"But even then Naz was a pro in everything except his status. He had a professional
outlook through being brought up by Brendan Ingle and training with the pros in a gym
which had the great Herol Graham.
"In those days, I was playing at boxing. But now Naz is the past of British featherweight
boxing and I'm the future.
"As I've said, when we fought as amateurs he was a million years more mature even
though we were the same age. Now, although the world featherweight division is a
terrific one, I know I'm capable of beating any of them. But Naz is the man I really
want.
"I'm an attacking fighter and have a style that will not be easy for Naseem. I can box
going backwards, forwards, or side to side, and that means I c an beat him.
"I'm still hungry, but feel with Naz that hunger has gone. My desire burns. Naseem
versus Calvo means nothing."
