Cook gets Zoff

BEATEN WBO lightweight title challenger and
former WBA king Stefano Zoff of Italy has been
named official contender for European champion
Jason Cook. The EBU has issued a deadline of
November 2 for respective managers and promoters
to lodge contracts.
Another British fighter under European title orders is
Castleford southpaw Noel Wilders, who was named to
face Fabien Guillerme of France for the vacant
bantamweight belt.
Purse offers must reach the Board by September 24.

Stone for Hare?

JAMES HARE is to defend his Commonwealth
welterweight title in Huddersfield on October 5.
Supporting him is stablemate and unbeaten flyweight
Dale Robinson, who takes on Levi Pattison in what
is both a defence of his Central Area crown and British
title eliminator.
No challenger has yet been announced for the
undefeated Hare, but a possible future opponent is
former WBC title contender Adrian Stone, who hasn't
boxed since Shane Mosley knocked him out in July
2001 but said he wants to continue his career.
Stone is due to return to Britain shortly and was
here over the summer. Plans for him to box on
Tuesday's show in Bethnal Green were shelved.
There are certainly many options for Stone, who
can box either as a welter or light-middle. At the lower
weight he could also challenge IBO champ Jawaid
Khaliq or British title-holder Neil Sinclair.
But that Stone has taken so long to make a
decision doesn't augur well.
Usually boxers take great persuasion to call it a
day, but Stone, having had several offers to box over
the past year, hasn't been in a great rush to carry on.

Floyd faces jail

THE October 5 WBC lightweight title rematch in
Las Vegas between Floyd Mayweather and
Jose Luis Castillo has hit a serious snag.
Castillo injured himself training this week and may
not be ready, but then Floyd was at the centre of a
car-ramming incident in Las Vegas involving a woman
who is mother to one of the boxer's children.
This lady alleges a car belonging to Mayweather
tried to force her off the road. Mayweather's lawyer
said Floyd was the passenger, not the driver.
The driver did give a police statement, but was not
arrested, but as Mayweather is on a suspended prison
sentence for two counts of domestic violence, Nevada
law says he automatically goes to jail if he is convicted
again within the next seven years.
As we went to press the October show was still
going ahead.

Corrales held up

A ROW between promoter Bob Arum and comebacking
Diego Corrales could delay the former
IBF super-featherweight champion's return.
Corrales, who has not fought since January 2000
after being jailed for spousal abuse, was aiming to box
in Las Vegas on October 4 but wants Arum to pay him
$100,000 as per his existing contract.
Arum, though, said the deal was for boxing on
HBO and the October date is on the Telefutura network.
The response from Arum, who has offered Corrales
around $25,000, was basically "take it or leave it."

MATTHEW BARNEY makes his bow for new
promoter Eugene Maloney on his latest
Sunday afternoon show (September 22) at the
Elephant & Castle Leisure Centre.
The Southampton stylist meets Paul Owen of Sheffield over
10 rounds for his old British Masters super-middle title (vacant).
Owen, who fights out of the Glyn Rhodes camp, has improved
a lot in recent fights (is unbeaten in his last four) but lacks belief
and apparently isn't the greatest trainer in the world.
Barney is the opposite - believed in himself when no one else
did and is always in the gym. Few thought he could beat hardman
Hussain Osman in their rematch, but Barney did.
Osman had stopped him first time round.
Matthew, a long-range boxer, is a sharp puncher at best so
looks set for a clear points win. He then returns to this venue on
October 20 to top again against Michael Bowen.
