Darkie quits
DARKIE SMITH, the trainer who forced the
disqualification of son Stephen against Ricky
Hatton last month, has reportedly handed in his
licence. If so, he will not be required to attend the
Boxing Board's disciplinary hearing on November 5.
The hearing goes ahead regardless and Stephen
Smith along with Frank Warren, who has asked for
compensation - which is his right - are to attend.
Haye joins the
Fight Factory
DAVID HAYE, Britain's World amateur
heavyweight silver medallist, has
surprisingly decided to turn professional and
under Eugene Maloney.
It had always been thought the hardpunching
Haye, 21, would remain amateur
until after the 2004 Olympics. He applied for
his licence on Tuesday.
It is a major coup for Maloney and remains
to be seen whether, by signing one of Britain's
brightest talents, he can interest BBC and
secure a television deal.
Maloney, who runs the Fight Factory in
London, is expected to make an announcement
regarding Haye within a few weeks.
Tackie not for Hatton
FRANK WARREN has denied reports saying
Ricky Hatton's next WBU light-welter title
defence will be against Ghanaian Ben Tackie.
"I've never had a conversation with anyone
regarding Tackie," he said. "I'm not interested
in the fight. Tackie was completely outclassed
in his last fight by Kostya Tszyu."
Warren goes to America next week to talk
with cable network Showtime with regards to
finalising dates for Hatton, Joe Calzaghe and
Wayne Alexander's WBO light-middleweight
title challenge against Daniel Santos.
Mormeck schedule
JEAN-MARC MORMECK'S WBA cruiserweight title
defence against official challenger Alexander
Gurov of Ukraine will almost certainly take place in
Marseille on March 3, not in December as mooted.
Promoter Michel Acaries has scrapped plans for
a show at the Paris Bercy Stadium on December 3
and will instead stage a card two days later at
Levallois in the French capital's suburbs.
Topping on December 5 will be Bruno Girard
putting his "WBA light-heavy belt" on the line.
Mahyar Monshipour defends his European superbantam
title on the same card.
JUNIOR WITTER, in hard-hitting form with eight straight stoppages or knockouts,
takes on durable South African southpaw Lucky Sambo over eight at Renfrew.
Sambo, licensed as Samba, hasn't boxed in 12 months since Bradley Pryce widely
outpointed him over 12 rounds in Cardiff for the WBO Inter-continental lightweight title.
Two fights earlier Sambo had also lasted 12 when losing a decision to Enoch Zitha for
the South African 9st 9lbs title, so Lucky is a fair opponent.
He is also a losing fighter in the big ones, however, and at a weight below. There seems
little risk for Witter as he tunes up for his WBO 10st final eliminator next month.
Sambo doesn't hit hard - two quick wins from 12 (two draws) - and Pryce's mobility and
speed were too much for him. Witter, therefore, ought to prove even more bamboozling, plus
dangerous. The unorthodox Junior can outclass him and force a stoppage in about six.
