Barney pulls out
MATTHEW BARNEY, whose father has complained to me
everyone is avoiding his super-middleweight son,
pulled out of a February 10 British Masters title defence
against Rueben Groenewald at the Elephant & Castle
Leisure Centre.
According to promoter Eugene Maloney, Barney withdrew
just as posters were about to be printed plugging what
was the main event. Eugene was told Barney had "bigger
fish to fry".
While Matthew is now expected to box in Dagenham on
January 26, when lightweight Colin Dunne tops against
exciting South African Martin Jacobs, Maloney has
restructured his Sunday afternoon show.
Groenewald will now face Wayne Asker for the vacant
Masters 12st belt, while Gary Logan drops to light-middle
on the undercard in an interesting match against Bobby
Banghar of Bedford.

Vann hits back
MICKEY VANN rang regarding our report of the Ricky
Hatton-Justin Rowsell fight, in which the Aussie's
corner threw in the towel early in round two and the Leeds
official seemingly missed it, stopping the fight shortly afterwards.
"Everyone, Boxing News and Sky TV, is saying I missed
the towel, but it's never been legal in this country anyway."
While Mickey admits he didn't see the towel, the point
he is making is it didn't make any d fference. Had he seen
it, he would have let the fight continue until he thought it
was right to stop the match.
Vann believes the practice of throwing in the towel is
dangerous. "I refereed a fight in Italy once and the towel
came in from someone in the crowd and this caused great
confusion," he said.
"Also, if a boxer is in trouble and iut of the corner of his
eye sees the towel come in, he could be in danger of getting
hurt should he stop boxing.
"But what you wrote and what was said made me out to
be a bad referee."
Vann, never short of a word or ccnfidence, believes one
day he will be recognised as the best in the business.
Though Mickey, 57, didn't sound well the day he called
me, he trains three times a week anc works hard at the job.
"I believe I can keep getting better," he said.

Nunn's easy
pickings
MICHAEL NUNN, who several times pulled out of lightheavyweight
title final eliminators with Sheffield's
Clinton Woods, is taking no chances as he goes about
establishing himself as a cruiserweight contender.
Ttie American southpaw's next contest takes place at
Caesars casino, Indiana on January 23 against Tyrone
Armstead, who in 28 pro fights has been beaten 12
times (three draws).
All Armstead has going for him is durability. He has
been stopped before, but each of his last four contests (all
losses) has gone the distance.

CANNING TOWN'S Peacock ABC provided five boxers and
Dagenham ABC t w o for the London Select which took on
a Glasgow t e am in aid of charity at Kilmarnock Prison
on December 9.
The Scots won 5-2, with London's successes coming from the
Peacock pair of senior ANDREW BOYD and undefeated junior
prospect DANNY GOULDING.
"It was a great weekend," said Barry Bowers of Peacock ABC.
"We were well looked after the whole time.
"We were particularly pleased by Danny's performance. He is
unbeaten in six outings and we're securing him a place in the
academy in County Durham.
"We also hope to have a return match with Glasgow in March."
