Maurice's motivation
MAKE no mistake who wears the trousers in the
Maurice Harris household. The New Jersey
heavyweight scored a terrific win over Sergei
Liakhovich in Atlantic City last weekend (see pages
10-11) then revealed the motivation behind his victory.
"My wife took me by the face and told me I was
messing up our money," he said. "That's when I knew
I had to do something about it."
Gainer dwindles
WBA featherweight champion Derrick Gainer is in
danger of throwing away the best years of his
career.
He was supposed to defend against mandatory
contender Daniel Seda, but for various reasons the
match has been postponed three times.
Now it is reported Gainer will not fight because the
money being offered is unsatisfactory.
SCOTT HARRISON has been
done no favours with the
change of opponent for his 12-
round bill-topper at Braehead
Arena in Glasgow tomorrow
night (Saturday June 8).
The local hero had been preparing to
challenge WBO featherweight king Julio
Pablo Chacon until the Argentine
withdrew last week because of an arm
injury.
Harrison would have started underdog,
but with a real chance of a victory
which would have propelled him on to
the world stage.
COTTON BITE CONTROVERSY • EDDIE COTTON, the New Jersey referee who handles the big one tomorrow, seemingly allows fighters to bite.
Cotton said this week: "This is going to be a good night, with someone getting knocked out. I don't anticipate
having any problems with Lewis or Tyson."
If things do turn ugly, a foul-filled bout is nothing new to the official. He has officiated several bouts involving
the notorious Andrew Golota. "I was in tough when Golota fouled out against Riddick Bowe [rematch December
1996]. I was also in the ring when Andrew bit Samson Po'uha."
That last line must send a shiver down the spine of Team Lewis, because of course Tyson has already bitten
the champion during that conference brawl.
Cotton was slated by our US correspondent Jim Brady for doing nothing when Golota, in big trouble against
Po'uha during their May 1995 fights, sunk his teeth into Samson's neck in the fourth. Brady wrote in BN-.
"Golota's bite was so obvious, it would have made Count Dracula blush!
"As the shocked and pain-wracked Po'uha turned to the referee to complain, Cotton, who apparently thought
the fight was under Transylvanian Commission rules, said nothing."
Po'uha went berserk and nearly knocked out Golota. He succeeded only in punching himself out and was
stopped in the fifth.
Last word to Cotton: "I may be a little nervous up until the bell rings tomorrow, but when it does I'm the boss."
Aren't the fighters supposed to say that?
